What are the reasons behind bad odour in water?
Bad-smelling water is an issue that can strike at any time. Bad-smelling tap water can harm the personal cleanliness, capacity to entertain guests, and even the fundamental hydration habits. It's critical to have the water tested for sanitary reasons and to protect family's health.
Reasons for bad odour in water
1. Hydrogen Sulphide
This gas has a foul stench, comparable to that of a rotten egg, and can make the water taste sulphurous. Metal corrosion in your water heater might sometimes be the cause of sulphide gas production. One may notice a yellowing or blackish stain in your kitchen sink if this occurs in your home. If customers detect a hydrogen sulphide odour in treated or softened water, it's possible that sulphate-reducing bacteria have made their way into the system.
2. Organic matter that is degrading
Food deposits are a common problem around the kitchen sink, and they can clog drains. Clean and disinfect the drains to remove any scents, and have your pipes inspected for rotting organic debris that has accumulated and is now growing, generating the foul aromas. If the pressure tank emits an unpleasant stench, it may be necessary to do routine maintenance and cleaning. During the summer, this issue frequently arises.
3. Bacterial activity
Bacteria is one of the most common causes of foul odour in your water. Bacteria could be building in your drain as a result of simple things like food, soap, or even mistakenly washed hair. It may emit a sewage-like stink or a rotten-egg odour near your drain. If bacteria is allowed to grow, it will eventually multiply. Every day, one should clean (and rinse) around the drains and water sources using soap.
4. Industrial waste in the neighbourhood
If the water feels especially salty when users drink it, investigate the local sources or the area around for irrigation drainage and the resulting industrial waste. Unfortunately, this is a typical problem that many homeowners face. If it doesn't taste like industrial waste but still tastes salty, it could be from nearby sea salt or natural rock formations. One should not detect an unpleasant odour emanating from the water supply in this situation.
5. The water has a fishy odour
One'd never drink straight from a pond or a lake. There are far too many microscopic microorganisms in the environment that can make one sick. The same bacteria could be invading the water source if the home's water smells fishy.
Organic materials, such as rotting leaves or broken-down plants, could be the source of the problem.
6. My water has a metallic flavour to it
It's possible that the water tastes like metal because of ancient metal piping that has slowly corroded into the water. After years of usage, manganese, zinc, iron, or copper could rust. These residues of metal aren't hazardous in most cases, but they might give the water an unappealing flavour. The taste of clear water iron in particular is recognised to be metallic. A low pH level could potentially be the cause of the metallic taste in the water (less than 7). A low pH indicates that the water is acidic, which can lead to pipe erosion and a metallic taste.
