Overview
Apart from the general managerial and administrative abilities required for the day-to-day operation of any big facility, the numerous desalination processes entail a wide range of scientific and engineering technologies, as well as a variety of trade crafts for ongoing operation and maintenance.
For the diagnostic control, chemical conditioning, and general operation of the various processes, people must have sufficient theoretical and practical understanding of chemical and physical sciences, as well as mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering.
Why do water treatment require expert professionals?
Desalination plants or any other water treatment, require highly trained mechanics, pump fitters, electricians, instrument technicians, electronic technicians, and computer programmers to run and maintain the equipment, as well as complex control systems and computerised recorders and controllers.
The availability of skilled and experienced engineers, technicians, and specialists with in-depth knowledge and relevant abilities is exceedingly restricted in today's "state of the art" desalination industry, which is a highly specialized and continually increasing field. As a result, each big desalination facility owner or operator should incorporate a comprehensive training programme to train new employees and update the abilities to exist employees. Such training can take place in-house with company-employed instructors, through a contractual agreement with a professional training organisation, or through a combination of the two.
Proper O&M rules in RO plants
1. Wear non-slippery soled safety shoes or boots.
2. Avoid contact with corrosive and/or contaminated solids, liquids, gases, or vapours by wearing personal protective equipment and chemical-resistant clothes.
3. Do not mix chemicals without first consulting a competent scientist or safety expert.
4. Follow all safety precautions when storing, transporting, handling, or pouring chemicals.
5. Before using electrical equipment, be sure it's safe.
6. Protect your eyes by using safety goggles in any situation where you might be exposed to dust, flying particles, or liquid spills.
7. Use a respirator or gas mask if you are exposed to harmful aerosols, dusts, vapours, or gases.
8. Handle highly corrosive agents with particular caution, such as liquid or gaseous chlorine, strong acids or alkalis, and so on.
9. Follow all safety precautions while entering limited locations.
10. Avoid smoking, eating, or drinking in situations where chemical or biological contamination is a possibility.
11. If latex sensitivity has been diagnosed, use non-latex gloves.
Conclusion
Proper operation and maintenance of reverse osmosis treatment plants are critically important in securing the compliance of standards.
There is a need to evolve guidelines/criteria for proper operation and maintenance of the reverse osmosis plants as well as criteria for selection of its operator(s) in terms of their technical capabilities and experience.
